The picks worth a closer look
A real chef's knife, properly fitted. A Japanese gyuto sized to his hand, engraved with his initials on the bolster — if he cooks at all, the most-used gift you'll ever give him.
A bespoke pair of British shoes. Northampton-made, hand-fitted, resoled three times over twenty years. For the man with strong opinions, a George Cleverley or John Lobb fitting produces shoes made on a last carved to his foot — they outlive him.
The thing he mentioned in March. The single best gift category for any man over 40: the book, the fountain pen, the kitchen tool, the watch strap he mentioned once, casually, and never bought himself. Note it down through the year, buy it in November, give it last.
The wrapping
Heavy brown kraft paper, jute string instead of ribbon, a sprig of fir under the knot, a small handwritten tag — deliberate craft, not a pink bow. Stack the parcels under a tree lit with proper warm white lights, pour him a whisky, and hand them over one at a time.
