For decades the high-street department store was the destination. That has shifted: the great Christmas displays are now at independent and family-owned garden centres, which offer vast display space, fresh wreath and tree stock, a genuine seasonal calendar, a proper café, free parking and a grotto for the children.

Notes on stand-outs: Wisley's Christmas display is elegant and less commercial than most; Frosts of Woburn Sands often themes rooms by colour palette; Van Hage's Christmas barn is enormous; Crews Hill has a dozen centres in a square mile, worth a half-day; Petersham Nurseries is the chic, slightly expensive option with impeccable styling.
When to go
The Christmas display switches on at most centres in mid to late October. The peak period is the last weekend of November through the first weekend of December.

- Get a real tree netted at the centre and fitted to a stand on site, into the house within 24 hours. Cut 1cm off the base before standing in water.
- Order the wreath and any garland in advance so it is made fresh, not held back.
- Buy one new tree decoration a year rather than a 50-pack of plastic baubles — after ten years the tree has stories, after thirty it's heirloom.
What to skip at a garden centre
Make a day of it
Coffee and a mince pie at the café, an unhurried walk around the display rooms, the grotto if you have small children, lunch, and the boot loaded by 1pm. It is one of the more quietly enjoyable Saturdays of the year.
And the lights outside?
Once the wreath is on the door and the tree is in the window, the question becomes the rest of the house — roofline, porch, front tree, windows facing the street. The garden centre handles the indoors and the doorstep; we handle the rooflines and the things at height.
