Across SL5 (Ascot/Sunningdale), SL4 (Windsor), HP9 (Beaconsfield) and SL9 (Gerrards Cross), most full-estate Christmas lighting briefs land between £8,000 and £25,000 inc. VAT. Smaller detached homes off Ascot High Street or Beaconsfield Old Town typically run £2,500–£5,500. The brief here is wider than anywhere else we work — a Georgian manor, a 1920s country house and an 18,000 sq ft glass-and-render new-build can all sit on the same lane.

The Berkshire–Buckinghamshire country house belt

These four areas share a customer profile: large detached homes on 0.5–10 acre plots, set well back from the road, with mature gardens and considered architecture.

  • Georgian originals and Georgian-style rebuilds — Beaconsfield Old Town, Penn, Knotty Green, Chalfont St Peter, Dropmore, older Sunningdale.
  • 1920s–1940s Arts and Crafts and country house — Coworth Park, Englefield Green, Old Windsor, Hedsor, Bray, the lanes north of Beaconsfield.
  • 2000s and 2010s mega-builds — Wentworth's outer roads, Sunningdale Park, the Camberley/Bagshot border, Gerrards Cross's Bull Lane / Camp Road area, and Beaconsfield's newer estates.

The first two demand restraint and architectural sympathy. The third is more confident — bigger gestures, more ambitious driveway approaches, and sometimes a contemporary cool-white treatment.

Warm whiteThe standard everywhere in this belt, including most new-builds.
Cool whiteOnly specified where a house is genuinely steel-and-glass and the existing exterior lighting is already cool.

Lighting from the gate to the front door

On a country house, the experience is everything between the gate and the front door, not just the façade. A proper installation covers six zones.

  1. 1The entrance gates and gate piers. Soft warm white through wrought iron gates; pin-light wash on stone or brick piers.
  2. 2The approach trees. Specimen trees flanking the gate or the first 30m of drive, wrapped to 4–6m.
  3. 3The drive itself. On long drives, every third or fourth verge tree wrapped to a uniform height so headlights pick up a rhythm.
  4. 4The forecourt. A wrapped feature tree, lit topiary, or pin-lit specimen shrubs.
  5. 5The house. Continuous warm white roofline, gables, dormers, balustrades, porte-cochère, columns, window cornices.
  6. 6The outbuildings. Coach house, garage block, stable yard, pool pavilion, guest cottage — lit consistently so the estate reads as one piece.

Most clients in this segment spent between £8,000 and £18,000 last season. Price is driven by linear metres of light, number and height of wrapped trees, and lift/access requirements — not by postcode.

Designing for the new-build mega-house

New-build architecture in Sunningdale Park, parts of Wentworth, the newer Gerrards Cross estates and north of Beaconsfield is very different: large glass openings, render rather than brick, flat or low-pitched roofs, visible steel structural elements.

  1. 1Use the rooflines you have. Often a single long horizontal eaves run rather than a multi-gable Victorian set.
  2. 2Light the structure. Steel columns, render returns, balcony underlines.
  3. 3Wrap the architectural trees. New-build gardens often centre on a small number of mature transplanted trees — lighting them well is the single biggest gesture available.
  4. 4Hold the colour temperature. Even on a contemporary house, 2700K warm white reads better than cool white on render.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to light an Ascot or Sunningdale country house? Most country house briefs in SL5 sit between £6,500 and £12,000 inc. VAT. Larger estates with full driveway, gates and outbuildings typically range £12,000–£25,000+.

Can you do gated estates with security access? Yes. We register installers in advance, our vans are sign-written, ID badges are worn at all times, and we coordinate with on-site security where required.

Do you cover both Berkshire and Buckinghamshire from one trip? Yes — our teams cover SL5, SL4, HP9, SL9 and surrounding villages in a single seasonal route, with no travel premium across this catchment.

My house is on a long drive. Can you light the whole approach? Yes, and on a country house this is typically the strongest gesture. We design the circuit layout in advance, run discreet weatherproof IP-rated cabling along verges, and install timers so the whole approach lights as one.

Do you do contemporary new-builds as well as period houses? Yes — both segments are a meaningful share of our work here. The brief and materials differ; the standards do not.

What about very high-security properties? We work routinely with private security teams across Windsor and Ascot. Pre-vetting, DBS-checked installers and signed NDAs are standard on request.
