The brief

A large detached family home in Esher, set back behind a gravel drive with two mature trees near the boundary. The family entertains through December and wanted the approach to feel like an arrival — lights visible from the road, warm and generous, without turning the house into a display.

What we installed

  • Warm white roofline across the main elevation and the projecting garage wing
  • Both driveway trees close-wound to full height, so the drive is lit by the trees rather than by floodlights
  • Wreath and porch garland at the entrance, colour-matched to the roofline
  • Timer control, tested at dusk with the owners present

The constraint

Height and reach. The main gable sits well above single-ladder height, and the gravel drive is a poor ladder base. Working position was set up on stable ground with the ladder footed, and the higher elevation was staged in sections rather than reached from one position.

The trees were the other question: both sit close to the boundary and take wind. Fixings were sized so nothing bites into bark and nothing pulls loose in a January gale.

The result

A single continuous line of warm white that follows the architecture, with two lit trees giving depth to the approach. From the road the house reads as one composition, not three separate ideas.

Maintained through the season — one visit, one connector replaced after a storm — then taken down in January.
