The brief
A tile-hung boutique hotel in Sevenoaks, Kent — eighteen rooms, a restaurant doing full covers through December, and a cobbled courtyard used for arrivals. The general manager's brief was operational before it was aesthetic: no closures, no scaffolding at check-in, no cables anyone can trip on.
What we installed
- Warm white festoon across the frontage, following the eaves
- Fresh garland and two lit bay trees at the entrance
- Catenary-hung festoon over the full courtyard
- Timer and photocell, on at dusk, off at 1am after last service
How do you install Christmas lights on a trading hotel?
You work the hours nobody books. Everything here went up between 6am and 10am across two mornings, with the courtyard done first so arrivals were never affected. Catenary wire spans between existing eye bolts and a discreet wall anchor, tensioned so the festoon hangs at 3.2m — high enough for a delivery van, low enough to feel like a canopy. We carry public liability documentation and RAMS as standard, because a hotel's insurer will ask for both before the first ladder goes up.
Why it works
Hospitality lighting has to do two jobs: pull people off the street, and photograph well from a table. The frontage does the first. The courtyard canopy does the second — overhead festoon puts warm light on faces, which is why those are the pictures that end up on Instagram, tagged, all December.
